County commission recognizes undefeated state champion Rio Rancho High football team

For the second time in three years, the Sandoval County Commission proclaimed a day to honor an undefeated, state champion Rio Rancho High School Football Team.

The latest such day was February 17, 2017. The night before, District 2 County Commissioner Jay Block read the proclamation declaring Rio Rancho High School Football Day, during the regular meeting of the county commission.

Commissioner Block read the proclamation as his son, Tyler, a member of the Rio Rancho football team, stood next to him. The proclamation noted that the team defeated the Las Cruces High School Bulldogs 39 -17 on December 3, 2016 to complete this perfect season. Rio Rancho High also had a perfect and a state championship in 2014.

While commending the team for its success on the field, Commissioner Block noted that 17 players boast grade point averages of 3.5 or higher. “That shows that their focus is on academics, which is where it should be,” Commissioner Block said. He also noted that he arranged for the team to come before the commission on the same night as wounded Iraqi War veteran Eric Schei so they “could meet a real hero.”

The football players did, in fact, meet Schei. They formed a line so each player could shake his hand individually.

As his finished reading the proclamation declaring Rio Rancho High School Football Day, Commissioner Block also told the players. “We expect you to be back here next year.”
