Rio Rancho Observer’s sports editor recognized as Sandoval County Hero

If you follow high school sports in Rio Rancho, you must know the name Gary Herron. As sports editor of the Rio Rancho Observer since 2000, Herron has covered every major sporting event involving the two Rio Rancho-based high schools throughout their existence.

He knows every local high school athlete, and he follows the careers of those who go on to have successful college and professional careers. In his spare time, Herron has written more than one book on baseball, along with a book on the history of the City of Rio Rancho.

For his commitment to chronicling so many of the goods things that happen in the community, the Sandoval County Commission has named Gary Herron its latest Sandoval County Community Hero.

He received the award at the November 17, 2016 county commission meeting. “You are an iconic member of Rio Rancho and surrounding communities,” District 4 Commissioner Glenn Walters said as he presented Herron the award. “You truly are a Sandoval County Community Hero for you long-standing efforts to report on and recognize high school sports activities and athletes, as well as other community activities and events in Rio Rancho and Sandoval County.”
